A Kano State High Court has ordered the remand of a man charged with culpable homicide after he allegedly killed his wife following a dispute over preparing a local snack.

Justice Musa Dahiru of the Kano State High Court sitting on Miller Road issued the remand order on Thursday after Idris Kurma was arraigned on a one-count charge of culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code.

According to court proceedings, the incident occurred in Goda village, Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State. The prosecution alleges that Kurma strangled his wife, Aisha Idris, after she refused to grind groundnuts to make kuli-kuli, a popular snack made from roasted, spiced groundnuts that are deep-fried into a crunchy delicacy.

The prosecution counsel, Barrister Lamido Abba Soron Dinki, read the charge to the defendant, who pleaded not guilty. Soron Dinki requested an adjournment to enable the prosecution to present its witnesses.

Justice Dahiru granted the request and ordered that Kurma be remanded in a correctional facility pending further hearing. The case was adjourned to December 12, 2025, for continuation.

Kuli-kuli is widely consumed across Northern Nigeria as a snack and source of protein. Police in Kano confirmed the arrest and said investigations were ongoing at the time of the arraignment.
