Barcelona confirmed the signing of England winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United on Friday, May 29, 2026, for a fee that could rise to €80 million ($93 million).
The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the La Liga champions, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2031. Gordon joins as Barcelona’s first major summer signing, bolstering an attack set to lose veteran striker Robert Lewandowski at the end of his contract and possibly Marcus Rashford after his loan spell from Manchester United expires.
Gordon arrives after his best season at Newcastle, netting 17 goals in all competitions, including 10 in 12 Champions League matches. Barcelona said he arrives “after being top scorer with Newcastle United last season and the player who took on most dribbles,” adding that he impressed in three appearances against Barca in last season’s Champions League.
At his unveiling at the Palau Blaugrana Arena, Gordon addressed reporters in fluent Spanish, calling the move “the biggest dream possible.” He said: “As a kid, to play for Barcelona is the biggest dream possible, it’s the biggest club on the planet. I know it comes with a lot of responsibility, but I’m ready for this kind of challenge.”
The transfer marks Newcastle’s second-largest sale in club history after Liverpool’s £125 million move for Alexander Isak last summer. Gordon, originally signed from Everton for £45 million in January 2023, made 152 appearances for Newcastle and helped them win the Carabao Cup, ending a 70-year trophy drought.
