U.S. President Donald Trump has announced he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, accusing them of reporting fake news.
Trump made the announcement on Friday, September 18, 2026, in a post on Truth Social, saying the ban was effective immediately.
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them ‘alive.’ Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Trump wrote.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
Speaking later in the Oval Office, Trump said the ban was not prompted by one particular report but was cumulative.
“No reason. It’s really just cumulative stories over the last few years, you get sick of it. They purposely write negative news and they do that because they want to try and diminish the Republicans,” he told reporters.
When asked how far the ban would extend, Trump said: “It’s a very simple ban. I don’t want them in my office. I don’t want them here. I would say the ban would go as far as you can.”
He also warned that other outlets including The New York Times and The Washington Post could be next.
The White House has not clarified whether the ban means revoking press credentials or blocking access to the White House grounds. As of Friday evening, journalists from the three outlets were still working inside the White House.
CNN said it stands behind its White House team and their fair and accurate reporting and would challenge any restrictions that violate its First Amendment rights. Politico said it would continue covering the White House and defend its First Amendment rights.
