The Federal Government has announced that activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1 will be low-key.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, disclosed this at the inaugural meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the commemoration of the anniversary.
The meeting, held on Thursday in Abuja, was chaired by Akume who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office, Mrs Bekearedebo Augusta Warrens. This was contained in a statement signed by Chris Ugwuegbulam, Head of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the SGF.
Akume said the anniversary provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the contributions, sacrifices and enduring legacies of the nation’s founding fathers and heroines who worked for independence, noting that the country’s achievements since independence were built on the foundation laid by them.
He added that the celebration would also provide an opportunity for the present administration to showcase its achievements and reform initiatives against the backdrop of socio-economic challenges confronting the nation.
The programme of activities will commence with a World Press Conference on Thursday, September 24, followed by a Juma’at Service on Friday, September 25, a Church Service on Sunday, September 27, and an Independence Day Public Lecture on Wednesday, September 30.
The celebration will culminate in a nationwide broadcast by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
