Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, says he is still awaiting the Federal Government’s approval to begin operations of his proposed security outfit, “Iru Ekun Security Network”, as part of efforts to dislodge criminal elements from forests across the South-West.
In a statement issued in Ibadan on Monday, Igboho said all required documents and procedural requirements for the registration and approval of the outfit have been submitted to the Federal Government. “We have submitted all the required documents for our registered security firm, ‘Iru Ekun Security Network’, and are only waiting for the Federal Government’s approval, which will be granted soon,” he stated.
Igboho said the group would focus on flushing out terrorists, kidnappers, bandits and other hoodlums threatening rural communities in Yorubaland. He added that “Iru Ekun” is ready to collaborate with the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other security stakeholders.
The activist also pledged compliance with Executive Order 001 of 2026 signed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on May 20, 2026, which regulates private security firms and community-based vigilante groups in the state. Makinde said the order was necessary to ensure all security-related groups operate within a clear legal framework amid growing insecurity.
Igboho commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as a firm commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, particularly in the South-West. He stressed that peace and security are critical to agricultural production and food security in rural areas.
The development marks a shift from Igboho’s earlier confrontations with federal authorities. His Ibadan residence was raided by DSS and army operatives in July 2021 over alleged arms stockpiling, after which he fled Nigeria and was later detained in Benin Republic before regaining freedom in 2022. Since returning to Nigeria in January 2026, he has reiterated readiness to work with government to tackle insecurity.
