The Nigerian Senate witnessed a tense and chaotic moment on Wednesday evening, July 23, 2025, as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele engaged in a heated shouting match during a closed-door executive session.
The confrontation nearly escalated into a physical altercation before other senators stepped in to de-escalate tensions.
The dispute arose while the Senate leadership deliberated over whether to adjourn the current legislative sitting this week or next for the traditional two-month annual recess.
Sources revealed that disagreements over the adjournment plans exposed visible cracks within the chamber’s top hierarchy.
Senator Ali Ndume criticized the leadership for failing to hold a prior meeting to unify their position before placing the matter before the floor, urging greater coordination among the leaders.
His remarks seemed to ignite underlying frustrations, prompting Senate Leader Bamidele to openly express his dissatisfaction with Akpabio’s leadership style.
“I am frustrated as Senate Leader working under Senate President Akpabio. He does not call leadership meetings, he doesn’t consult with anyone.
He is autocratic. In fact, I am contemplating resigning as Senate Leader,” Bamidele said during the session.
In response, Akpabio sharply rebuked Bamidele, asserting his authority. “Senator Opeyemi should sit down! He cannot speak while I am speaking.
I am in charge here,” Akpabio said. “I have served as Commissioner, two-term Governor, Senate Minority Leader, and a powerful Minister. I know the Senate rules and leadership more than you.”
The confrontation intensified to the point where a physical fight seemed imminent, but intervention by fellow senators helped restore order. The incident sheds light on ongoing leadership tensions within the Nigerian Senate as it approaches its recess.
No official statement has been issued by the Senate leadership regarding the episode.
