The opening stages were cagey, with the first yellow card shown after a heavy challenge from Botafogo centre-back Alexander Barboza on Richard Rios. Palmeiras dominated possession but struggled to convert it into clear-cut chances.
Striker Vitor Roque came close when he failed to connect with a dangerous cross from Joaquin Piquerez, and moments later saw his penalty appeal dismissed. The closest Palmeiras came in the first half was in stoppage time when a powerful effort from Rios skimmed the top of the net.
After the break, Estevao Willian tested John with a long-range strike before seeing a goal ruled out for offside. Palmeiras continued to press, with Mauricio forcing John into a reflex save from a close-range header that sent the game into extra time.
John continued to be the busier goalkeeper, denying Rios early in extra time. However, he was powerless to stop Paulinho moments later, whose precise finish proved decisive and sent Palmeiras through to the next round.
