The National Assembly has extended the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 budget to December 31, 2026.
The approval was granted during plenary on Tuesday, September 30, following motions moved by the Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and House Leader Julius Ihonvbere.
The House of Representatives and the Senate both approved the extension, giving Ministries, Departments and Agencies an additional three months to complete ongoing capital projects and utilise funds already appropriated.
The bill was fast-tracked from first to third reading in both chambers.
According to Bamidele, the extension became necessary because implementation of capital projects under the 2025 budget has not reached optimal levels despite funds being released. He said the move will protect ongoing public investments, prevent abandoned projects, and maximise value from funds already released.
Ihonvbere, in the House, said as a responsible parliament, they decided to extend the deadline to ensure non-implementation is not blamed on expiration.
This is the fourth extension of the 2025 capital budget. The budget was originally supposed to expire on December 31, 2025. It was first extended to March 31, 2026, then to June 30, then to September 30, and now to December 31, 2026.
With the latest extension, the 2025 capital budget will continue to run alongside the 2026 budget of N68.32 trillion.
