Democrat Josh Turek has won Iowa’s United States Senate election, defeating Republican Ashley Hinson and capturing a seat previously held by the Republican Party, according to a race call by the Associated Press on Wednesday, 4 November 2026. The result adds a significant Democratic gain to an election in which control of Congress has shifted.

Turek, a Democratic member of the Iowa House of Representatives and a two-time Paralympic gold medallist, will succeed Republican Senator Joni Ernst, who decided not to seek another term. His victory is a party flip, rather than a Democratic hold, because the outgoing senator is a Republican.

The Associated Press called the contest for Turek after voting in Tuesday’s midterm elections. The call is a news organisation’s projection of the winner based on election data and should not be confused with the later official certification of results by Iowa election authorities. A final certified vote total was not established in the sources available for this report.

Why the Iowa Senate race matters

Iowa had been regarded as favourable territory for Republicans. President Donald Trump won the state in three consecutive presidential elections, and Hinson entered the contest with his backing. The race tightened during the campaign, however, as Democrats sought to turn dissatisfaction over living costs and federal policy into gains beyond their traditional strongholds.

Turek campaigned heavily on household affordability, healthcare and government accountability. He challenged Hinson over her support for the Trump administration’s 2025 tax legislation, including provisions affecting Medicaid and food assistance. He also highlighted concerns about cancer rates in Iowa and the financial pressures facing farmers.

Hinson, a Republican member of the US House of Representatives, attacked Turek’s attendance record in the Iowa legislature and argued that his positions on immigration and other issues were too liberal for the state. The competing arguments reflected a broader national contest over prices, public services and the direction of federal government.

The incoming senator has an unusual political and sporting background. Born with spina bifida, Turek uses a wheelchair and represented the United States in wheelchair basketball, winning Paralympic gold medals twice. He subsequently entered state politics and won election to the Iowa House in 2022.

His campaign made accessibility and direct contact with voters visible elements of its presentation. Election coverage documented his efforts to meet constituents while navigating physical obstacles. His sporting achievements and legislative experience helped distinguish him in a race that became unexpectedly competitive.

How the result affects control of the Senate

Republicans began the election holding 53 Senate seats to the Democrats’ 47, including independents who caucus with Democrats. That arithmetic meant Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to take the chamber. Iowa’s result was one of the important pickups in that contest, alongside Democratic victories in other closely watched states.

Multiple national election trackers now report that Democrats have secured control of the Senate. That wider chamber outcome is based on projected race winners and is separate from the certification of individual state results. The new Senate will be able to scrutinise the administration’s legislative programme and nominations, although the precise balance will depend on the final results of every contest.

What it means for African communities in America

For Nigerians and other Africans living in the United States, the composition of Congress is relevant to debates over immigration administration, federal spending, education, healthcare and the country’s foreign policy. Turek’s election does not by itself establish any change to immigration rules or policy towards Africa. Those questions will depend on legislation, executive action and the positions taken by the new Congress.

The Iowa contest also illustrates how a state long considered reliably Republican at presidential level can vote differently in a Senate election. Turek’s projected victory will become an official election result only through Iowa’s statutory canvassing and certification process.
