The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Oyo State chapter has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in the state to begin an indefinite strike. The action follows the recent abduction of teachers and pupils in the state.

In a statement issued Monday, the union said the strike will remain in force until the Oyo State Government and security agencies secure the release of the abducted victims and provide adequate security in schools. NUT described the incidents as a threat to the safety of teachers and the right of children to education.

The union also urged parents and guardians to keep their children and wards at home until the security situation improves.

Public schools across Oyo State are expected to remain shut until the government meets the union’s demands.
