World leaders have reacted to the high-profile summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, organized at Trump’s initiative to negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
As expected by Trump, the summit concluded without securing a ceasefire agreement, a key objective for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who acknowledged no deal was forthcoming.
Trump had expressed skepticism about achieving a ceasefire, describing the meeting as a “feel-out” summit intended to bring Putin to the negotiating table. During a lengthy joint press conference, Trump admitted progress was made but emphasized no formal deal was reached. “There were many, many points that we agreed on – most of them, I would say.
A couple of big ones that we haven’t quite gotten there, but we’ve made some headway,” Trump said.
“There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” he added, hinting that territorial concessions and possible US security guarantees for Ukraine were among the topics largely agreed upon. However, he stressed that Ukraine must also consent, saying, “Ukraine has to agree to it… Zelensky gotta make a deal.”
Reacting on social media, Zelensky commended the planned trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the US, and Russia, which Trump proposed.
Zelensky said the format is suitable for addressing key issues at a leadership level. He announced his upcoming meeting with Trump in Washington, D.C., on Monday to discuss the details of ending the war.
Zelensky highlighted the importance of European involvement at every stage to ensure credible security guarantees alongside the US, noting positive signals from the American side regarding their participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security.
