The World Bank has approved $300 million to fund the Solutions for the Internally Displaced and Host Communities Project (SOLID) aimed at bolstering support for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and their host communities in Northern Nigeria.
This significant financing will target the most affected Local Government Areas in the region and is poised to benefit approximately 7.4 million people, including about 1.3 million IDPs.
The SOLID project adopts an integrated development approach aligned with Nigeria’s long-term development objectives.
Its focus includes building climate-resilient infrastructure, enhancing social cohesion and community resilience through inclusive planning and cooperative models, supporting livelihoods to create economic opportunities, and strengthening institutional capacity to manage demographic pressures effectively.
Northern Nigeria has witnessed massive displacement due to ongoing conflict and insecurity, with more than 3.5 million people displaced and host communities overstretched in providing essential services and infrastructure.
The World Bank’s intervention aims to transition displaced persons and their hosts from humanitarian aid dependency to self-reliance, ensuring sustainable improvement in living conditions through durable solutions.
This approval on August 7, 2025, reflects a concerted effort to address the humanitarian-development nexus, promoting resilience and recovery for some of Nigeria’s most vulnerable populations.
