Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has announced the withdrawal of criminal complaints against musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, popularly known as KWAM 1, and Comfort Emmanson, an Ibom Air passenger, following recent incidents of unruly behavior at Nigerian airports.
According to Keyamo, the decisions were taken purely on compassionate grounds, considering the remorse shown by the individuals involved.
KWAM 1’s flight ban has been reduced to one month, and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will withdraw its criminal complaints against him.
Additionally, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will work with KWAM 1 as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol.
Comfort Emmanson, who was arrested after an incident on an Ibom Air flight, will be released from Kirikiri Prisons within the week after Ibom Air agreed to drop its complaint.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has also lifted the lifetime flying ban imposed on her.
Keyamo emphasized that safety and security in the aviation sector remain paramount, and the government has decided to draw a line after these clemencies.
The minister has directed all relevant aviation agencies to begin a retreat next week to retrain security personnel on handling disruptive passengers and de-escalating conflicts.
ValueJet’s Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba will have their licenses restored after serving a one-month ban and undergoing mandatory professional reappraisal.
The NCAA will announce the details of this process. Keyamo stressed that while wrongs were committed by both passengers and airline staff, the authorities acted on compassionate grounds in resolving the cases.
