The West African Examinations Council has dismissed viral claims that the English Language examination taken on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, as part of the ongoing WASSCE for School Candidates has been cancelled.

In a statement released on Tuesday, June 2 by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs for WAEC Nigeria, the examination body clarified that a fake press release circulating online – which claimed the exam was cancelled and would be rescheduled – did not originate from the Council.

The statement read:

“The West African Examinations Council, Nigeria, has been drawn to a purported press release spreading across various social media platforms. According to the false release dated Friday, May 30, 2025, the English Language paper written on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 in the ongoing WASSCE for School Candidates has been cancelled, and a new date for the examination will be announced soon.

The management of WAEC wishes to state that this press release did not come from the Council. The examination has not been cancelled. While the source of this misinformation remains unknown, it is clear that mischief-makers are behind this false claim, aiming to tarnish the Council’s reputation and create unnecessary panic among candidates.”

WAEC reassured students, parents and schools that all official updates are shared through its verified social media handles and accredited media platforms. The Council also emphasized that only press releases signed by the Public Affairs Department should be considered legitimate.

The statement concluded by thanking stakeholders for their trust over WAEC’s 73 years of conducting examinations in Nigeria and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality and credible assessment services.

Candidates who sat for the exam have been urged to disregard the rumor and await their results through official channels. Authorities are also investigating the source of the false information.
