The latest Global Peace Index (GPI) report released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has once again named Mauritius as Africa’s most peaceful country, maintaining this status for the 18th consecutive year. Mauritius ranks 26th globally with a score of 1.586, outperforming several developed nations such as the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. The island nation’s peace is attributed to low crime rates, stable governance, and minimal involvement in external conflicts.
Following Mauritius, Botswana and Namibia hold the second and third positions on the continent, ranking 43rd and 50th globally, respectively. These countries are recognized for their democratic governance and social stability.
Despite these positive examples, the continent overall experienced a decline in peace in 2025. Out of 50 African countries evaluated, 26 saw their peace scores worsen compared to 2024, while only 22 improved and two remained unchanged. Sub-Saharan Africa’s average peace rating dropped by 0.17%, with 36 of 44 countries experiencing some form of conflict in the past five years—a significant increase from just seven countries in 2008.
Globally, peace is at its lowest level since the GPI began in 2008, with 87 countries experiencing a deterioration in peace in 2024 alone. The economic cost of violence reached nearly $20 trillion, representing 11.6% of global GDP.
