The late Nigerian football legend and former Super Eagles captain and coach, Christian Chukwu, popularly known as “Chairman,” was laid to rest on Saturday, August 16, in his country home, Obe, in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. Chukwu passed away on April 12 at the age of 74.

The burial marked the conclusion of nearly 10 days of tributes and commemorative events held in Lagos and Enugu, celebrating the life and legacy of the iconic football figure.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah described Chukwu as a disciplined, dignified, and empathetic man whose humility inspired many.

He assured the family of the government’s commitment to immortalizing the football legend’s legacy.

The Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt Rev. Samuel Ike, praised Chukwu’s significant contributions to Nigerian and African football and highlighted his leadership on and off the pitch.

Known for leading Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980, Chukwu’s impact as a player, coach, and mentor remains deeply felt in the football community.

His legacy endures as a symbol of excellence and inspiration for future generations.
