The Nigerian Air Force has begun the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters with production now underway at Bell Textron’s facility in Amarillo, Texas, United States.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, led a Nigerian Air Force delegation to Bell Textron for a beam signing ceremony marking the commencement of production. The ceremony represents a major milestone in the Nigeria-United States defence cooperation programme.
The acquisition is being executed under the US Foreign Military Sales programme. The US Department of Defense awarded Bell a $455 million manufacturing contract in March 2024 for the 12 helicopters. The wider programme, which includes engines, weapons, spares, training and support services, is valued at $997 million.
According to Bell, the package includes 28 T700-GE-401C engines, 2,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System guidance sections, M197 20mm cannons, night vision systems and comprehensive logistics support.
Bell said its delegates toured the production line where they observed the helicopter assembly and ceremonially signed the aircraft frame destined for service with the Nigerian Air Force.
Speaking at the event, Air Marshal Aneke said the acquisition reflects the strategic vision of the Federal Government to enhance Nigeria’s defence and security architecture. He thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and continued support for the modernisation of the Armed Forces.
He said the AH-1Z Viper will play a vital role in strengthening counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations and enhancing the ability to protect citizens and territorial integrity.
Production and delivery of the 12 helicopters are projected to be completed by early 2029.
