The Ojora of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom, Oba AbdulFatai Oyeyinka Aremu Aromire Oyegbemi, has taken the unprecedented step of dethroning six traditional chiefs for attending the Labour Party’s campaign flag-off in Apapa, Lagos State, without his approval. The monarch declared the chiefs’ actions a violation of palace protocol and an impersonation of his authority.

The decision was announced following a palace meeting held on Monday, June 30, 2025, where Oba Oyegbemi summoned the affected chiefs to his palace for clarification. The dethroned chiefs include Chief Lateef Ojora (Bale Alaba Oro), Chief Saliu Biliamin (Bale Alafia Dodoro), Chief Taiwo Hassan (Bale Oke Ira), Chief Idris Ojora (Bale Abule Kere), Chief Hakeem Oseni (Bale Mosafejo Amukoko), and Chief Sule Balogun (Balogun of Abule Kere).

In a statement, the monarch expressed disappointment, emphasizing that no chief should act on his behalf or make decisions without his explicit consent, as they serve to represent him and uphold the kingdom’s traditions. The decisive action underscores his commitment to maintaining order and coherence within his leadership structure.

Oba Oyegbemi also used the occasion to commend the current government’s development initiatives in Ojora Land and reaffirmed his support for the administration’s efforts to foster growth and progress in the kingdom.

The monarch further stressed the importance of transparency and collaboration between traditional authorities and their political representation, reminding all chiefs of their responsibilities while serving under the Ojora Kingdom.

This disciplinary move comes amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections and follows the Labour Party’s growing influence in Lagos, notably after their 2023 presidential candidate’s strong showing in the area. The chiefs’ unauthorized attendance at the Labour Party event was seen as a breach of loyalty and protocol within the traditional leadership hierarchy.
