The Japanese government has designated the city of Kisarazu as the official hometown for Nigerians willing to live and work in Japan.

This initiative aims to strengthen cultural ties and workforce cooperation between the two countries.

The announcement was made on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD9).

Under this new partnership, Japan will introduce a special visa category for highly skilled and talented young Nigerians, as well as artisans and blue-collar workers who are ready to upskill.

This move is expected to promote manpower development, strengthen bilateral exchanges, and support regional revitalization efforts by increasing local populations.

The designation builds on existing ties between Kisarazu and Nigeria, particularly the city’s role as the official host town for the Nigerian Olympic contingent during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced $5.5 billion in new investments for Africa and highlighted Japan’s focus on private sector-led growth, youth and women empowerment, and regional integration.

This partnership is part of Japan’s broader strategy to deepen cultural diplomacy, boost economic growth, and enhance workforce productivity.

Similar designations were made for other African countries, including Tanzania, Ghana, and Mozambique, with Japanese cities Nagai, Sanjo, and Imabari named as their respective hometowns.
