Nigeria’s former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly preparing to contest in the 2027 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to a close ally within the party.

The Bayelsa-born ex-leader is said to have accepted the call by key PDP leaders and elders who believe his leadership from 2010 to 2015 brought stability to the country and improved the economy.

Sources indicate that the initiative to draft Jonathan for the 2027 race is driven by a desire to address the rising poverty, hardship, and general suffering in Nigeria.

His prospective candidacy is viewed as a strategic move to reposition Nigeria and restore its economic pride.

It is also believed that his single-term bid could pave the way for power to return to the North in 2031, while maintaining a smoother balance of power dynamics between the North and South.

Behind-the-scenes consultations have reportedly taken place, including a recent meeting between Jonathan and former military President General Ibrahim Babangida in Minna, Niger State.

These meetings are aimed at securing political support, notably from northern leaders. While the former president has not made a public declaration, the preparations within the PDP suggest serious momentum towards his candidacy.

Jonathan, who previously served one term as elected president (2011–2015) and conceded defeat in the 2015 elections, would be constitutionally eligible to run for another single term if he contests in 2027.

The development has sparked political discussions about PDP’s strategies and the possible implications for the upcoming general elections.

While his official announcement is awaited, the political speculation is accompanied by ongoing debate about the strongest opposition candidate to challenge incumbent President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Jonathan’s candidacy is seen by some as a formidable challenge given his experience and prior record.

This information aligns with recent reports and confirmations from trusted political sources and party insiders, although the PDP’s national public spokesman has not officially confirmed any candidacy decision as of now.
