Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their nearly three-month strike and will resume work starting Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The strike, which began on March 24, was triggered by non-payment of the new minimum wage and several months of salary arrears.
The suspension follows the intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who facilitated the release of ₦16 billion from the Area Councils’ Internally Generated Revenue to cover June 2025 salaries under the new minimum wage and 60 percent of nine months’ arrears.
This funding breakthrough was achieved after a stakeholder meeting involving the minister, union leaders, area council chairmen, and other key officials.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, expressed appreciation to members for their resilience during the industrial action and commended the minister’s role in pressuring the councils to release the funds.
While the strike has been suspended, the union announced the formation of a special committee tasked with harmonizing all outstanding arrears and developing a sustainable plan for their permanent settlement within two weeks.
Teachers have been directed to return to classrooms and resume their duties, with assurances that efforts will continue to ensure full payment of all outstanding entitlements.
The resolution brings relief to thousands of primary school pupils in the FCT who have been out of school due to the prolonged strike.
