More than 40 people, including children and medical staff, have been killed in a devastating attack on a hospital in Sudan, marking yet another grim chapter in the country’s ongoing civil war. The strike occurred at Al-Mujlad Hospital in West Kordofan, near active frontlines of the conflict now entering its third year.
The facility was the only operational healthcare center in the area and provided essential services, including dialysis treatment. Among the victims were at least six children and five health workers, with many others injured.
Blame for the attack has been directed at the Sudanese Armed Forces, who are accused of targeting the hospital in an effort to strike rival fighters believed to be inside the building. However, no official response has been given, and the group allegedly sheltering within the hospital has also remained silent.
Sudan’s war, which began in April 2023, has spiraled into what is now considered the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Civilians continue to suffer mass displacement, with thousands killed and millions forced to flee their homes. Both warring factions have been accused of war crimes, including attacks on medical facilities and personnel.
The situation for children is particularly dire. Many are malnourished, out of school, and vulnerable to disease and exploitation. Some of the most distressing reports include cases of sexual violence against children, with survivors as young as one year old. In the face of overwhelming trauma, some children have even attempted to take their own lives.
The humanitarian response remains severely underfunded, leaving countless families without the support they desperately need.
