Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91. The monarch, who ascended the throne in 1960, died peacefully on Sunday, July 13, 2025, just hours after the announcement of the death of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oba Adetona was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers, reigning for over six decades. He was widely respected for his cultural leadership, political wisdom, and dedication to the development and unity of Ijebuland. Under his reign, the region witnessed significant infrastructural growth, business expansion, and social harmony.

Known for his outspoken stance on governance, national unity, and ethics in leadership, Oba Adetona was a close confidant of the late President Buhari, sharing decades of friendship rooted in mutual respect and shared values.

His death marks the end of an era for Ijebuland and traditional rulership in Nigeria. Tributes have poured in from political leaders, traditional institutions, and cultural groups across the country, praising him as a father figure and a rare gem.

Details about burial arrangements are expected to be released by the Awujale’s Palace in Ijebu-Ode in due course.
