The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a landslide victory in Lagos State’s local government elections, winning all 57 chairmanship positions and 375 out of 376 councillorship seats.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) announced the results on Sunday, confirming the ruling party’s dominance across all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
The election, held on Saturday, saw the APC consolidate its hold on grassroots governance in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
LASIEC Chairman Justice Ayotunde Phillips declared the exercise peaceful and transparent, though opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), had raised concerns about voter apathy and alleged irregularities.
With this victory, the APC strengthens its political stronghold in Lagos, maintaining an unbroken streak of controlling the state’s local councils since 1999. The sole councillorship seat lost was narrowly conceded to a candidate from the opposition in one ward.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hailed the outcome as a testament to the party’s popularity, while critics argue the lack of competitive opposition reflects systemic challenges in Nigeria’s local elections. Full results have been published on LASIEC’s official portal.
