The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization Afenifere has paid tribute to its former leader, the late Senator Abraham Adesanya, on the 17th anniversary of his passing.
In a statement released by the group’s organizing secretary Abagun Kole Omololu, Afenifere described Adesanya as “a titan of conscience, courage and unyielding patriotism” who dedicated his life to the pursuit of true federalism in Nigeria.
“Senator Adesanya stood as a beacon of progressive thought during Nigeria’s most challenging democratic periods,” the statement read. “His leadership of Afenifere exemplified dignified tenacity at a time when many had compromised their principles.”
The group highlighted Adesanya’s unwavering commitment to restructuring Nigeria along federalist lines, noting that his advocacy was “not opportunistic but rooted in deep conviction about building a nation on consensus and mutual respect.”
Omololu emphasized that Adesanya’s legacy remains relevant today, stating: “He understood that nations thrive through inclusive governance rather than mere geographical coexistence. His vision continues to guide our pursuit of equitable nation-building.”
The late statesman, who died in 2008 at age 85, played pivotal roles in Nigeria’s democratic struggles, particularly during the military era. Afenifere remembered him as “a moral compass” who resisted dictatorship while advocating for Yoruba interests within a united Nigeria.
The organization prayed that future generations would draw inspiration from Adesanya’s “principled leadership and selfless service to the nation.” The commemoration comes amid renewed national conversations about restructuring and true federalism in Nigeria’s current political landscape.
