The Publisher of Ovation, Bashorun Dele Momodu has weighed in on the custody battle between his niece Sophia Momodu and Afrobeat singer Davido, expressing surprise over Davido’s affidavit seeking joint custody of their daughter.
In a series of posts on his verified X handle on Saturday, July 6, 2024 Momodu stated, “I had seen David’s affidavit about two weeks ago, and I was very surprised as David and I had spoken on a video call days earlier, with him and Pastor Tobi Adegboyega, and he never told me he had any custody issues with my niece.”
Momodu explained that their previous conversations focused on Davido’s forthcoming wedding and his reconnection with his daughter, adding, “We were all very excited about his forthcoming wedding ceremony… I thought everything was settled, and he and Sophia would now have the opportunity to take maximum care of their daughter.”
Momodu revealed that the primary issues between Sophia and Davido concern financial support, including school fees, accommodation, and a nanny’s salary. He acknowledged that Davido’s father, Deji Adeleke, had resolved unpaid school fees and provided a car for their granddaughter.
Regarding accommodation, Momodu said, “Sophia’s request was that David should pay half of the accommodation while she would pay the other half. David said he could only contribute ₦5 million annually.”
He noted that Sophia allowed Davido access to their daughter, provided her nanny is present. “Sophia allowed David access to their daughter, provided she has her nanny around 24/7. The 9-year-old herself made this request and I believe this should be favourably considered and accepted.”
Momodu urged both parties to prioritize their daughter’s well-being and engage sincerely in the court-recommended alternative dispute resolution process.
“The vitriolic rhetoric in the media should be avoided by all means, as this only further inflames what is already a traumatic experience for all parties involved, especially the child in question,” He stated.
