Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have rescued a mentally challenged woman and her newborn baby after she delivered by the roadside in Kwali Area Council of Abuja.
The incident occurred in the early hours when officers on patrol received information about the woman who had just given birth in a community.
Police officers, including members of the Gender Unit, were mobilised to the scene where the mother and child were safely evacuated and taken to a hospital for immediate medical attention.
Both the woman and the baby were later confirmed to be in stable condition after receiving treatment.
Authorities said the mother and child have since been handed over to welfare officials and relocated to a government care facility for proper support and protection.
The police urged residents to promptly report emergencies and individuals in distress to enable timely intervention.
