The Labour Party has fixed May 23, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was announced in a communiqué issued after a National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja and observed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
According to the timetable released, the party will submit its membership register to the electoral body on April 15, 2026, as part of preparations for the primaries.
Primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly are scheduled to hold on May 15, 2026.
The party also approved timelines for its congresses at ward, local government and state levels, alongside a national convention set for April 11, 2026.
The NEC reviewed internal developments within the party and ratified actions taken by the current leadership regarding ongoing reorganisation efforts.
As part of disciplinary measures, several members were suspended over alleged anti-party activities and involvement in actions considered detrimental to the party’s unity.
The party also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding membership through a combination of digital registration and manual processes across rural communities.
It further resolved to fill vacant positions within its structure through interim appointments pending the conduct of substantive congresses.
The leadership urged members to resolve disputes through internal mechanisms to promote unity as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
