US President Donald Trump has escalated tensions with Democratic leaders by threatening to deploy National Guard troops to Baltimore as part of his aggressive crackdown on crime and immigration.
On Truth Social, Trump described Baltimore as an “out of control, crime-ridden” city and pledged to send troops if Maryland Governor Wes Moore seeks help, referencing a similar move he made in Los Angeles under California Governor Gavin Newsom, whom he derisively nicknamed.
Trump asserted that federal intervention would “quickly clean up the Crime,” citing recent troop deployments to Washington, D.C.
Maryland Governor Moore sharply rebuked Trump’s comments, accusing him of recycling “1980s scare tactics.”
Moore invited Trump to walk with him through Baltimore to witness the city’s progress, highlighting a homicide rate decline of more than 20 percent since he took office.
“The last time the homicide rate was this low in Baltimore City, I was not born yet,” Moore remarked on X (formerly Twitter).
Trump responded by attacking Moore’s record and threatened to withhold federal funding connected to a collapsed bridge, saying he would “much prefer that he clean up this Crime disaster before I go there for a ‘walk.’”
This dispute mirrors a larger national debate between Trump and Democratic governors regarding the use of military force in cities.
Earlier in August, Trump deployed nearly 5,000 troops to Los Angeles following immigration enforcement protests, a decision strongly opposed by Governor Newsom.
Troops were also sent to Washington, D.C., where they began carrying weapons publicly after initially keeping them in armories.
Reports suggest Chicago could be the next city targeted for troop deployment. Trump remarked on August 22, “We’re going to make our cities very, very safe. I think Chicago will be our next and then we’ll help with New York.”
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson dismissed the idea.
Pritzker criticized Trump and the MAGA movement, stating on X, “Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are trying to paint their party as one of ‘law and order.’ That couldn’t be further from the truth.”
Chicago reported 573 homicides in 2024, marking an 8 percent decrease from the previous year.
The Pentagon has not confirmed whether troops will be deployed in Chicago, while Trump signals further federal military interventions in Democratic-led cities remain possible.
