Dr. Doyin Abiola, a pioneering figure in Nigerian journalism and the first female Managing Director and Publisher of the National Concord newspapers, died peacefully at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. She was celebrated as the first Nigerian woman to hold the position of editor at a national daily newspaper.

Her illustrious career began in 1969 at the Daily Sketch Newspaper, where she authored the widely read “Tiro” column, addressing various public concerns including gender issues.

In 1970, she pursued a master’s degree in Journalism in the United States and upon her return, joined the Daily Times as a Features Writer, eventually rising to the role of Group Features Editor.

Dr. Abiola further advanced her education by earning a PhD in Communications and Political Science in 1979 from New York University.

Following her doctorate, she resumed work at the Daily Times editorial board, collaborating with other eminent editors such as Stanley Macebuh, Dele Giwa, and Amma Ogan.

In 1986, she broke new ground as the pioneer female editor and later Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of National Concord, setting a precedent in Nigerian media history.

Dr. Doyin Abiola was also known for her commitment to media education and development, serving on various advisory councils and nomination panels, and receiving prestigious honors including the Eisenhower Fellowship and the Diamond Award for Media Excellence Lifetime Achievement.

She was married to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, a prominent Nigerian political figure, supporting him through his historic struggle for democracy.

Her enduring legacy of courage, innovation, and dedication to journalistic integrity leaves a profound impact on Nigerian media and society.
