The Lagos State Government has issued an urgent warning advising residents in flood-prone low-lying areas of Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle (specifically the Ajilete axis) to relocate to higher ground due to forecasts of intensified rainfall and increased flood risk.

This advisory was communicated by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

In addition to these areas, Wahab highlighted Isheri in the OPIC axis as a location requiring high alert.

He reassured residents that communities such as Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja remain relatively safe from severe flooding.

The warning follows heavy rainfall over the weekend that caused widespread flooding in parts of Lagos, with viral reports showing submerged homes and vehicles navigating flooded streets due to overwhelmed drainage systems.

Wahab explained that Lagos, being a coastal city, is vulnerable to flash flooding exacerbated by climate change and tidal conditions that hinder water discharge into lagoons.

The government continues to invest in drainage infrastructure, including high-capacity pump stations and ongoing drainage clearing projects.

Residents were also urged to avoid dumping refuse into drainage channels to prevent blockages that worsen flooding.

This announcement comes amid ongoing efforts to mitigate flooding impacts, with the state government emphasizing the need for residents in vulnerable areas to take immediate precautionary measures for their safety.
