Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, whose portrayal of Ahanna in the 1995 film Rattlesnake helped establish him as one of the recognisable faces of Nigerian cinema, has died aged 57. His family announced the news on Friday, 23 October 2026, following what it described as a brief illness.

The announcement was made through Duru’s official Instagram account. The family thanked supporters for their prayers, love and understanding, but did not identify the illness or announce funeral arrangements. The precise date of death was not separately specified in the family’s announcement.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria also acknowledged his passing. The guild’s president, Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, paid tribute to the actor, joining colleagues and admirers who have been remembering his contribution to the Nigerian screen.

Duru’s career began in 1989 with Missing Mark, directed by Ndubuisi Oko. His breakthrough came in 1995 when he played Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the influential film produced by Amaka Igwe. The role introduced him to a wider audience at a time when Nollywood was establishing the storytelling and production traditions that would shape its growth.

Over subsequent decades he remained active across different periods of the Nigerian film industry. His film credits included Mboputa, Blood Vessel, Stigma, The Good Husband, Nnenda and Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons. The range of productions reflected a career that extended beyond the films with which audiences first associated him.

Born in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru later studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt. His training and screen experience helped sustain a lengthy career in an industry that changed substantially during his working life, from early home-video productions to more recent theatrical and streaming-era releases.

He also participated in the organisation of the acting profession. Duru served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010. That year, he received an Africa Movie Academy Awards nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. At the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards, he won the award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film for Mboputa.

His death follows a period of personal loss for the family. In August 2024, Duru publicly mourned the death of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi. The actor later discussed the experience in interviews, though those earlier family circumstances should not be linked to his final illness.

In June 2026, Duru also publicly rejected online videos and claims portraying him as critically ill. He condemned what he said were misleading and manipulated depictions of his health. The family has now described a brief illness but has released no medical details, and there is no established connection between the earlier rumours and his death.

President Bola Tinubu was among those who sent condolences following the announcement, while tributes from film-industry colleagues reflected the actor’s longstanding place in Nollywood.

Duru is particularly remembered for his portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, but his wider filmography and service to the Actors Guild of Nigeria form part of a career spanning more than three decades. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. May his soul rest in peace.
