The U.S. Department of Justice has seized approximately $201,400 in cryptocurrency that was allegedly intended to finance Hamas, disrupting what officials say was an active terrorist funding operation.
According to the Justice Department, these funds were traced to cryptocurrency wallets controlled by Hamas fundraising networks, which have reportedly laundered over $1.5 million in virtual currency since October 2024.
“At Attorney General Pam Bondi’s direction, the Department of Justice is committed to dismantling Hamas using every tool at our disposal,” said Sue J. Bai, head of the department’s National Security Division.
U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. emphasized the government’s determination to track and seize any financial assets supporting Hamas, stating, “These seizures show that this office will search high and low for every cent of money going to fund Hamas, wherever it is found, and in whatever form of currency.”
The FBI led the investigation, tracking transactions through multiple cryptocurrency addresses and exchanges. Assistant Director David J. Scott of the FBI Counterterrorism Division noted that seizing digital assets is a critical strategy in countering terrorist financing.
Authorities reportedly confiscated crypto wallets valued at around $89,900, as well as three accounts holding $111,500, registered under Palestinian individuals in Turkey and other locations.
The FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, Counterterrorism Division, and Cyber Division collaborated on the investigation as part of broader efforts to disrupt illicit financial networks.
