British rapper Michael Ebenazer Owuo Jr., widely known as Stormzy, has been banned from driving for nine months after being caught using a mobile phone while driving his Rolls-Royce. The incident, observed by an undercover officer, occurred on March 7, 2024, in West Kensington, London.
During a hearing at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court, District Judge Andrew Sweet described Stormzy’s actions as “dangerous and irresponsible,” highlighting his poor record on the road.
Stormzy had previously violated road safety laws by driving a Lamborghini Urus with illegally tinted windows, which allowed only 4% light transmission instead of the required 70%. The court also heard that the rapper had six penalty points on his license from an earlier speeding offense.
In addition to the driving ban, Stormzy was fined £2,010 after six more penalty points were added to his license, bringing the total to 12 points—enough under UK law to trigger disqualification.
Stormzy, 31, pleaded guilty to the offense through a written statement and accepted full responsibility. His lawyer, Peter Csemiczky, stated that the artist had apologized for his actions.
As one of the leading figures in the British grime music scene, Stormzy has made history in the music industry, including becoming the first Black British solo artist to headline the Glastonbury Festival in 2019.
