The Trump administration has released over 230,000 pages of previously sealed documents related to the 1968 assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The extensive collection includes FBI surveillance records, investigative notes, and correspondence about James Earl Ray, the man convicted of the murder.

This release follows an executive order aimed at declassifying files connected to the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., President John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy. The newly disclosed records, sealed since 1977, are intended to provide greater transparency about one of the most pivotal and tragic events in American history.

King’s surviving children, Martin Luther King III and Bernice King, expressed support for transparency but cautioned that the files could be misused to attack their father’s legacy. They noted that Dr. King was subjected during his lifetime to an extensive FBI campaign aimed at undermining him and the broader civil rights movement, urging the public to review the documents with empathy and respect.

While the documents may offer new insights, it remains to be seen whether they will alter the established historical understanding of King’s assassination.
