Former U.S. President Donald Trump sparked controversy Monday by suggesting Canada should abandon its sovereignty and become part of the United States. The comments came as Canadians headed to the polls for their federal election.

“Canada could be our cherished 51st state,” Trump posted on social media. “No more artificial borders from centuries past. Just imagine how magnificent this unified land would look.”

The unsolicited proposal from the Republican presidential candidate immediately drew sharp reactions across North America. Canadian politicians from all major parties quickly dismissed the idea, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office calling it “not a serious proposition from anyone who understands or respects the Canadian people.”

Trump’s post included a map showing Canada absorbed into U.S. territory, similar to campaign materials he previously used when floating the idea during his 2024 presidential run. Political analysts note the timing appears calculated to generate attention during Canada’s election cycle.

The former president has frequently referenced Canada during campaign stops, often criticizing the country’s immigration policies and energy regulations while praising its natural resources. However, this marks his most direct call for annexation to date.

Canadian social media users responded with humor and outrage, with #NotOur51stState trending nationally by midday. U.S. State Department officials declined to comment on the remarks from the former president, who remains the Republican frontrunner for the 2024 election.

The controversial proposal comes amid already strained U.S.-Canada relations, with ongoing trade disputes and policy differences between the neighboring nations. Canadian officials reaffirmed the country’s commitment to sovereignty, with one cabinet minister quipping, “We’ll keep our healthcare system and poutine, thank you very much.”
