The Nigerian government has announced the reintroduction of History as a mandatory subject in primary and secondary schools, starting from 2025.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, confirmed this development during a guest appearance on Channels Television’s End-of-Year Special Review show on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
According to Alausa, President Bola Tinubu has mandated the reintegration of Nigerian History into the curriculum, which was previously excluded by the previous administration. The Minister emphasized the importance of reconnecting young Nigerians with their heritage and culture, stating that the lack of historical education had led to a disconnection among the younger generation.
“We have now people of 30 years old totally disconnected from our history. It doesn’t happen in any part of the world,” Alausa remarked.
The Minister highlighted that the decision aligns with the government’s vision to create an informed and united populace, equipped with knowledge about the nation’s past. This move is expected to foster national pride and strengthen citizens’ sense of identity.
Starting in 2025, students in both primary and secondary schools across the country will be required to study Nigerian History as part of their academic curriculum.
