President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has approved the creation of two new federal universities in Osun and Ekiti states following his assent to bills establishing the institutions.

The newly established universities are the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, and the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Osun State.

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, made the announcement on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, confirming that the president signed the bills after their passage by the Senate and concurrence from the House of Representatives.

A statement from Bamidele’s office, titled “NASS Secures Presidential Assent to Federal Universities in Ekiti, Osun,” emphasized the universities’ critical role in addressing national challenges, including food security, technological advancement, and environmental sustainability.

“These universities will bridge the knowledge gap in science, technology, and innovation, promote environmental sustainability and climate action, and enhance agricultural innovation and food security in Nigeria,” Bamidele stated. He described the development as a significant milestone in the administration’s commitment to tackling food insecurity and climate change.

Before Tinubu’s approval, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, had strongly advocated for the establishment of both universities in a letter to the presidency dated February 19, 2025.

Alausa highlighted the unique focus of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, stating that it would specialize in technology-driven education and research, equipping students with 21st-century skills in engineering, digital innovation, and applied sciences. The institution is also expected to drive industrialization by fostering homegrown technological solutions and offering programs addressing climate change, renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable urban development.

Regarding the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Alausa stressed its importance in advancing agricultural research and innovation to address Nigeria’s food security challenges.

“The university will develop improved farming techniques, agro-processing methods, and climate-smart agriculture solutions to boost productivity and resilience,” he said. It will also integrate agricultural sciences with development studies, train professionals to address socioeconomic challenges in rural areas, and foster entrepreneurship and agribusiness to equip students with skills for self-employment and wealth creation.

Beyond academics, the universities are expected to stimulate economic activities in their host communities, creating employment and business opportunities. Additionally, they will serve as hubs for collaborative research with international institutions, government agencies, and the private sector.

Senator Bamidele praised President Tinubu for prioritizing knowledge-driven development, stressing that these universities would play a pivotal role in national growth.

“This is a landmark decision that will shape Nigeria’s future in agriculture, environmental science, and technological innovation. The benefits will extend beyond Osun and Ekiti, reaching the entire nation,” he stated.
