The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a significant enhancement to the national electricity grid with the addition of 5,910 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of transformer capacity. Aminu Tahir, General Manager of Project Coordination and Technical Assistant to the Managing Director/CEO, revealed this milestone during a presentation on ongoing projects under the company’s Project Management Unit (PMU).

Funded by international partners such as the World Bank, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the African Development Bank (AfDB), these projects are part of a broader initiative to strengthen Nigeria’s power transmission infrastructure. Procurement for Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-supported projects in Lagos and Ogun states is nearing completion.

Several projects under the PMU have been completed, while others are at advanced stages, with some reaching 80 percent completion. These efforts have collectively boosted the national grid’s transformer capacity by 5,910 MVA to date.

In a related development, TCN successfully restored bulk power supply nationwide through the re-energization of the Kainji–Birnin Kebbi 330kV transmission line after emergency repairs, ensuring improved stability and reliability of power transmission.

This capacity expansion complements other recent achievements, including the commissioning of 48 transformer projects in 2024 that added nearly 4,928 MVA to the grid, and upgrades to key substations such as the 132/33kV transformer at Ota in Ogun State, which increased capacity from 228MW to 328MW.

TCN’s ongoing modernization efforts, supported by international funding and strategic partnerships, aim to increase Nigeria’s transmission evacuation capacity from the current 8,500 MW to 10,000 MW within the next two years. These upgrades are critical to addressing power shortages, reducing transmission losses, and ensuring a more reliable electricity supply for residential, commercial, and industrial consumers across the country.
