The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has announced plans to shut down universities across Nigeria, with country-wide protests set to begin on Tuesday, July 9th, in response to unpaid salary arrears.

SSANU, alongside the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), has been negotiating with the Federal Government over four months of unpaid salaries. Despite a previous warning strike and a recent two-week ultimatum, SSANU accuses the government of failing to fulfill its promises.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim stated on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief program, “By Tuesday next week – that will be the ninth of July – we have directed our branches to hold protests all over the country… something definitely is wrong somewhere.”

He also announced plans for a larger protest in Abuja on July 18th, targeting the offices of the Minister of Education and the Minister of Labour. Ibrahim warned that if their demands remain unmet, the union would escalate to a “total, comprehensive, indefinite” strike.
