A petrol tanker fire accident occurred around 1 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, along the Abeokuta–Sagamu expressway in Ogun State, claiming an unconfirmed number of lives and causing significant property damage.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, explained that a 33,000-litre petrol-laden tanker overturned due to excessive speeding and loss of control, spilling its contents on the highway.
The spilled fuel sparked a massive inferno that spread quickly, engulfing nearby vehicles, including a truck and a tow vehicle, as well as electric poles and infrastructure supplying electricity to Mowe and its environs.
Emergency responders, including TRACE, Ogun State Fire Service, Nestlé PLC Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), police, Amotekun, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), acted quickly to extinguish the fire, conduct rescue operations, and manage fuel decantation to prevent further hazards.
Casualty figures are yet to be confirmed as rescue and emergency teams remain on site working to restore normalcy. Authorities have diverted traffic to a single lane in the affected area and urged motorists to exercise patience and cooperate with traffic diversions.
The incident highlights the dangers of excessive speeding by heavy vehicles and poses questions around road safety enforcement on critical transportation routes in the region.
TRACE and other agencies continue their investigation into the accident’s cause and aftermath while attending to affected victims and communities.
