Former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, is poised to become the next Olubadan of Ibadanland following the death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away early Monday, July 7, 2025, at age 90.

Oba Olakulehin was installed in July 2024 by Governor Seyi Makinde, succeeding Oba Dr. Mohood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died in March 2024. According to tradition, the Olubadan throne alternates between two ruling lines: Egbe Agba (civil) and Balogun (military).

Since the late Olakulehin came from the Balogun line, the next monarch is expected from the Egbe Agba line, where Ladoja is currently the most senior High Chief.

Ladoja, a former senator and governor of Oyo State (2003–2007), has steadily advanced through the traditional hierarchy. In August 2024, he was crowned Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland by Oba Olakulehin, ending controversy over his acceptance of the chieftaincy title.

Upon receiving his beaded crown, Ladoja emphasized that the Olubadan remains the paramount king of Ibadanland, with all other Obas serving as subjects and advisers.

He dismissed fears of crisis following reforms to the Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration, stating that differences were amicably resolved.

Ladoja affirmed, “Only those that God destined can become the Olubadan,” and pledged loyalty to the late Oba Olakulehin as his adviser and servant, underscoring the unity and stability within Ibadanland’s traditional institution.
