President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away today at approximately 4:30 pm in London after a prolonged illness. In a statement released by the Statehouse, President Tinubu expressed his condolences to Mrs. Aishat Buhari, the widow of the late leader.

In response to the passing, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of former President Buhari back to Nigeria.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s President twice, first elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2023. Prior to his civilian presidency, he was the military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.

As a mark of respect, President Tinubu has ordered that all national flags be flown at half-staff. The nation mourns the loss of a prominent leader who played significant roles in Nigeria’s political history.
