Ibadan’s traditional kingmakers have unanimously endorsed former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja as the next Olubadan, following the July 7 transition of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
The Olubadan-In-Council, led by Balogun of Ibadanland Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, ratified Ladoja’s nomination during Monday’s meeting, describing the 79-year-old as bearing the requisite experience and wisdom for the throne.
The Otun Olubadan’s nomination now awaits Governor Seyi Makinde’s formal approval, with palace sources indicating a public presentation ceremony will follow official confirmation.
Oba Ajibola highlighted expectations for Ladoja’s reign to bridge tradition and modernity while fostering unity, noting the community’s enthusiastic reception of the decision.
Ladoja, who governed Oyo State from 2003-2007, has maintained active involvement in Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy since leaving office.
His anticipated ascension marks a new chapter for Nigeria’s third-largest city, with observers noting his political acumen may prove valuable in navigating contemporary challenges facing the ancient kingdom.
