The Federal Government of Nigeria has raised the processing fee for establishing private universities from ₦5 million to ₦25 million, according to a memo issued by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on Monday.

The memo, signed by NUC’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, stated that the decision aims to reposition private universities to better meet national educational needs and improve regulation within the sector. The commission also announced a review of guidelines for the establishment of private universities.

As part of the changes, the fee for purchasing an application form for a private university has increased from ₦1 million to ₦5 million, while the processing fee has risen to ₦25 million.

Additionally, the NUC has suspended applications that have remained inactive for more than two years, including those for private open universities. Pending applicants who have already purchased forms must complete payment within 30 working days or risk losing their applications.
