The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced a mandatory prepaid customs duty of USD $80 (approximately ₦122,400) on all international postal shipments from Nigeria to the United States, effective August 29, 2025.

This includes all non-document items such as parcels and packages.

Ibrahim Musa, NIPOST Director of Corporate Communications, explained that while the fee is technically a customs duty imposed by the U.S. government under a new Executive Order suspending duty-free exemptions, NIPOST is tasked with the collection of this charge at the point of acceptance in any Nigerian postal outlet.

This policy change aligns with a broader U.S. directive impacting postal operators worldwide, not only those in Nigeria.

NIPOST cautioned that international cargo carriers may adopt more cautious handling, resulting in extended transit and processing times.

The new customs duty and associated increased inspections upon arrival in the U.S. mark a fundamental shift in both the cost and speed of sending parcels to the U.S. from Nigeria.

In response, NIPOST is actively engaging with international postal organizations, including the Universal Postal Union and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, to minimize service disruptions and remains committed to providing reliable and efficient service to its customers.
