In a momentous event marking a new chapter for Burkinabé sports, President Ibrahim Traore officially reopened the renovated August 4th Stadium on August 4, 2025.
The $300 million refurbishment has transformed the once-dilapidated arena into a world-class facility that meets both CAF and FIFA standards, ending a four-year ban on its use.
The grand reopening was celebrated with a star-studded charity football match featuring some of Africa’s most iconic football legends, including Nigeria’s Jay Jay Okocha and Taye Taiwo, Togo’s Emmanuel Adebayor, Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o, Mali’s Seydou Keita, alongside other celebrated players such as Charles Kabore, Rigobert Song, and Alex Song.
They faced off against Burkina Faso’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS), with President Traore himself taking to the pitch in a spirited exhibition match that electrified fans, despite a rain-soaked field.
The newly revamped stadium now includes modern seating arrangements, VIP lounges, digital scoreboards, and an upgraded athletics track, showcasing Burkina Faso’s ambition to host high-profile sports events.
The venue is set to host the national team’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifier against Egypt on September 8.
Samuel Eto’o, speaking on behalf of the football legends, praised President Traore’s leadership and the warm hospitality extended by Burkina Faso.
He remarked that the occasion was not only a celebration of sports but also a symbol of resilience and unity for the African continent.
Eto’o expressed hope that this visit would be the first of many, emphasizing the deep bonds shared among African nations through football.
The event combined thrilling football action with vibrant cultural performances, highlighting Burkina Faso’s rich heritage and its rising profile on the continental stage.
The successful reopening of August 4th Stadium stands as a testament to Burkina Faso’s dedication to sports development and national pride.
