The Lagos State Government has taken decisive action by shutting down Ajah Market over gross environmental infractions. The closure was announced by the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

This enforcement follows recent similar government interventions, including the indefinite shutdown of Itedo Market in the Lekki axis, which was closed due to repeated environmental violations and unauthorized roadside trading.

The Ajah Market closure signals the state government’s ongoing commitment to enforcing environmental sanitation laws and maintaining public health standards.

Commissioner Wahab’s statement emphasized Lagos State’s zero-tolerance policy towards environmental degradation and illegal trading activities in market areas.

The government’s action aligns with its broader campaign, tagged #ZeroToleranceLagos, aimed at restoring order and cleanliness across the metropolis.

Officials reported that the Ajah Market was sealed on October 4, 2025, after inspections revealed serious violations of sanitation regulations, including improper waste disposal, which posed significant health risks to traders and residents alike.

The state government has also deployed security operatives to monitor the closed market area to prevent illegal activities during the shutdown and to maintain public order.

Market traders and residents have expressed mixed reactions; some lament financial losses and disruption to their livelihoods, while others welcome the move as necessary for a cleaner, safer Lagos.

The Lagos State Government continues to urge all citizens and business operators to comply with environmental rules and participate actively in safeguarding the state’s public health infrastructure.

This crackdown on Ajah and other markets demonstrates the government’s determination to curb environmental pollution and illegal trading practices, thereby promoting sustainable urban development and improved quality of life for all Lagosians.
