The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on July 3, 2025, that it has received 12 additional applications for registration as political parties, bringing the total number of applicants to 122 ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, disclosed that the commission is processing these applications transparently and in line with the Electoral Act and the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022.
The commission has uploaded the list of new applicants, including their names, acronyms, addresses, and interim leadership details, on its website for public information.
Olumekun also noted a case where an interim Secretary of one association defected to another association, both yet to be registered. He urged all party promoters to maintain consistency in leadership and addresses to avoid delays in processing their applications.
The commission emphasized its commitment to fairness and adherence to legal requirements as it continues to evaluate the growing number of political associations seeking official party status in Nigeria.
