Gospel singer Timilehin Ajayi was seen praying in court on Tuesday as his trial continued over the gruesome murder of 24-year-old Salome Adaidu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member. Ajayi was arrested on January 12 and stands accused of killing Adaidu after she visited him at his residence in the Papalana area of New Karshi, Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. At the time of her death, Adaidu was serving at Nicon Insurance in Abuja.
Authorities apprehended Ajayi while he was allegedly attempting to dispose of Adaidu’s dismembered body, sparking widespread outrage given his status as a gospel musician. During police interrogation, Ajayi reportedly confessed to the crime, claiming jealousy over suspected infidelity. “She was my girlfriend. She was always cheating on me,” he allegedly said.
The trial resumed amid tight security, with Ajayi entering the courtroom clutching a Bible and visibly praying. His pious demeanor sharply contrasted with the brutality of the crime he is accused of committing. The case has drawn significant public and media attention, raising broader issues about gender-based violence, mental health, and the risks faced by young women in relationships.
The Nasarawa State High Court in Lafia has set June 26, 2025, for judgment. Presiding judge Justice Simon Aboki scheduled the date after both prosecution and defense submitted their final written addresses. Defense counsel Joseph Tuku Bisson urged the court to discharge and acquit Ajayi, arguing the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. Prosecuting counsel Joseph Kigbu countered, urging conviction based on the strength of the evidence.
Justice Aboki commended both legal teams for their diligence and adjourned the matter until the judgment date. The trial continues to captivate public interest due to the shocking nature of the crime and the profile of the accused.
